Three Expire in Domestic Conflagration

Reports have reached us that　Dean & Mrs.Arther Liddell,and　their dear daughter,Elizabeth　18,perished in a taging inferno,which consumed their gracious　Oxford home during the night.Another daughter,the lucky(nay,plucky!),Alice,survived　the blaze.While her severe burns　are being treated a littlemore　Infirmary,prospects for her recoverry are not at all encouraging.No visitor have　come and none are expected.We've learned that measurements for her coffin　have been taken,and her departed loves ones stored in an ice locker in the　likelihood that the whole family will be expeditiously interred at the same time.

取材では、ディーンとその妻アーサー・リデル夫妻、その愛娘で18歳のエリザベスが、大火の中を逃げられず命を落としたとのことだ。夜のうちにオックス フォード の風 雅な邸宅が火に包まれたという。もう一人の娘さん、実に運のいい（否、生命力の強いと言うべきか）アリスは、炎の中を生き延びた。彼女の酷い火傷について はもう少し病院で治療が続けられるが、回復は全く望むべくもない。訪問者はおらず、この先もなさそう。彼女の棺桶の寸法も取られ、既に旅立った愛する人々 は冷凍室に収められることになるのだろう。家族そろって同時に、手早く埋葬されるという見込みのもと。

A Most Reluctant Patient

Lovely little Alice Liddell,our favorite orphan,the report of whose charred body last appeared in these pages a year ago,has been moves to Rutledge Asylum.Her battered and crispy self was judged sufficiently healed for this removal to Rutledge,which is thought best suited to handle her symptoms.Investigation into the cause of the fire continues,as do the rumours regarding Alice's possible involvement. The doctors say she's suffering from“severe and pervasive trauma”――the clinical way of saying her wits have yet to be tethered.According to our source at Rutledge,her behavior is volatile and unpredictable,and she is obviously a danger to herself and others.We wish Dr.H.Q.Wilson,her treating physician,the best of British luck―he may need a suit of armour.

最も気の進 まない患者

体が黒焦げになった一件で、一年前に小欄に登場した我々ひいきの孤児、哀れなアリス・リデル嬢だが、ラトレッジ病院に移されていた。そのやつれて縮こ まった体は、彼女の症状に対処するにいかにも相応しいとされるラトレッジに移送できる程には、回復も十分と判断されたのだった。火事の原因は未だに調査中 であるが、アリスが関与している可能性については噂が絶えない。医師曰く、彼女は“過酷で広汎な精神的外傷”に苦しんでいる――医療の見地からして、彼女 の人の心はいまだ囚われたままだという。ラトレッジ病院筋では、彼女の振舞いは気まぐれで予測がつかないらしく、また自身にとっても周囲にとっても、明ら かに危険な存在となっている。彼女の主事医H．Q．ウィルソン師には、ご武運を祈ってやまない。――今の彼には本当に甲冑でも必要なのではないか。

 私がラトレッジ精神病院で過ごしたすべての時 を浚っても、このような類のものは他に見たことがない。どんな治療も彼女を衝き動かすことはできないように思えてくる。もしかしたら、ヒルなら彼女を揺さ ぶることができるのではないか。

アリスの瞳に炎がゆらめいた．．．

．．．彼女の虚ろな眼にはおぼろな反応の兆しすら洩れない。


二つの木片をカチカチと叩いてみた。反応はなかった。

ある夜には、彼女はバンシーのように叫んでいた。

彼女は此方から遠く、はるか遠くに行ってしまっている。



5. A DARK DREAM

Into a strangely familiar,yet utterly wicked Wonderland.Of that miraculous　place of Alice's youth,no vestige　survives.The once lush land is sick to death,its　beguiling fragrance now distinctly suggests a decaying corpse.

As she bravely returns to Wonderland,Alice hears those familiar screams,and a　whisper in the dark.“Alice.”Three times,in fact,her name is called.And three　times she fails to form the words left to die on her unhappy　tongue.“Mother”she　longs to cry.“Father,”too.Alas,they are gone.Consumed by the blaze.


But Alice needs to shake this haunting from her　mind.Indeed,her complete　attention is required for many other more pressing matters.Here.Now.In this most accused Wonderland,with the ever resourceful Cheshire Cat to　lead the way...

 暗き夢の中に彼女は落ちていった．．．

妙に見覚えがあり、今やすっかり堕落し切った不思議の国へ。アリスの幼き時代の奇跡の地の名残など、どこにもありはしない。かつての栄光の園は死に至る病 に かかり、鼻を突く異臭が腐敗した死体の存在をはっきりと物語っている。

果敢にも不思議の国に舞い戻ったアリスは、暗闇の中で、懐かしい悲鳴を聞いた。そしてまた、囁く声も。
「アリス」
確かにそう三度、彼女の名を呼んだのを。その度、彼女は覚束ない舌に死に際の言葉を紡ぐこともできなかった。
「ママ、パパ」
彼女は叫ぼうとした。
あわれ、彼らは帰らぬ人。あの炎で焼き尽くされてしまったのだから。

それでも、彼女はこの現れては消える想いを心から振り払わねばならなかった。実に、今この場では、もっと差し迫った多くの諸難題に一切の注意を注ぐ必要が あったから。この甚だしい責苦を負った不思議の国で、識見に富んだチェシャ猫が導いてくれる．．．

7. VALE OF TEARS

Those fortunate few who've eluded the Red Queen's pestilence so far serve as her guides.Still,it's up to Alice alone to truly root out Wonderland's affliction.She hasn't had much time for reflection, but Alice is afforded a respite of sorts during an illuminating chat with the erudite Caterpillar.

“Wonderland is severely damaged,”he begins,pausing to inhale the volatile mix of rotten leaves and putrefied fruit burbling within his smoldering hookah.


“You must set things right.Having lost what you loved,you nearly wiped us out.You've started to rebuild.Your task...and your pain...are not over.Even your fantasies have fragmented into tortured versions of themselves.You are wracked with guilt because you survived,and you dread the prospect of a life alone.Forget your pain,Alice!Destroy the Queen of Hearts.Wonderland,and your entire world,can become whole again.”

 赤の女王の迫害を逃れていた数少ない幸運な者 たちは、今までのところは彼女の支配に甘んじていた。それでも、不思議の国の苦渋を真に根絶できるのはアリスただ一人なのだ。熟考する時間は無かったが、 アリスは博学な芋虫との啓発的会話を通じ、ある種の休息を許されることとなった。


「不思議の国はめちゃくちゃになってしまった」
水煙管を燻らす度、ごぽごぽと音を立てる朽ち葉や腐った果実の混ぜ物。その気体を吸い込むのをやめ、彼は口火を切った。


「君に何とかしてもらわないと困る。
愛する者を失って、君は我々を消そうとしたが、今また作り始めた。しかし、君の使命も苦しみも、まだ終ってはいない。君の空想まで捻じ曲げられてバラバラ になってしまった。君は生き残ったことに罪を感じている。そして孤独な人生に怖れも抱いている。苦しみを忘れろ、アリス。女王を倒すのだ。そうすれば不思 議の国も君の世界も元通りになる。」
